A Life Jess Ordinary

Mail Order Beauty Boxes!

I don’t consider myself a beauty professional or anything, I just enjoy trying things out and finding what works for me and my skin, as well as personality.  In my day to day life I like to try various things, from simple and classic to a bit more trendy and adventurous.  Seeing all the seasonal trends, and awesome methods on the internet, recently I have been wanting to try some different beauty techniques  Not wanting to spend a ton of money on various full size products and possibly not liking it once using it. I decided to look into a monthly beauty box.

With more and more beauty boxes and other monthly clubs popping up, I decided to try a couple of them and post my thoughts on what I received and what I thought of them.  I chose two different Beauty Boxes that were running a special of some sort.  This was the deciding factor in giving these two a whirl and depending on my thoughts possibly maintaining a monthly subscription.

First, we have Julep, I was able to receive my first Julep Maven box for free, and just pay shipping ($2.99).  Julep seems to be very nail centric, while having a few beauty and skin products that are intriguing.  After signing up, I went through a beauty quiz that is supposed to match you with products that will suit your taste and style.  After completing the Maven Style Profile, it identified me as Boho Glam.  Not really agreeing I changed to Modern Beauty as honestly, I’m not one who has my nails done all the time.  So that means instead of receiving two nail polishes and a full size beauty product.  I would get two full size beauty products.  But Bonus, I had a $10 gift card from Bing and with Julep being so nail centric, I had to try the nail polish as well.  I will be saving that review for another post.

Glow Pore Minimizing Bronzer in Light Golden Bronze – I like the depth of color and that you get a lot with only using a little.  I use bronzer daily, and this has been my go to for the last week as I don’t need much and its easily blended out to give you that sunkissed glow.

Lip Gloss in Glowing – I like the lip gloss, but this is very sheer, lots of gloss and no real color payoff.  Also, rubs off easily and disappears rather quickly without too much use.

Next we have Ipsy, with Ipsy the monthly commitment is $10 and you get an array of sample size beauty, skin and hair products to try along with a cute bag that is based upon a theme that month.  I was drawn to this not only because of the price ($10, that’s giving up a couple of vanilla latte’s or whatever drink you normally get).  Instead of spending it on nothing tangible, you may just find your next fave product.  Or if you’re the thrifty type and don’t need all these bags you can use them for gift bags and give away things you haven’t used etc.  I think on paper, this is a win-win. YEAH!

Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Glide-On Eye Liner in Plushie – Love the purple, very deep and smudge-able.  I have used Urban Decay’s eye liner before but am a liquid liner gal.  I enjoy the different color, and would buy again as an alternative to my norm.  All in all I really enjoyed it.

Coastal Scents Shadow Palette Set 8 – This sample eye palette was a great addition, easy to throw into my bag if I will be glamming up elsewhere.  The colors included are Candlelight, Elven Midnight, Deep Eggplant, and Vibrant Blue.  All very pigmented colors that didn’t require many passes to obtain the shades that I have swatched.  I haven’t worn them for long so am unsure about its longevity or if they crease, but will update again at a later date.

Manna Kadar Cosmetics Sheer Glo – I used this lotion as a sort of highlighter under my brow for a subtle hint of shimmer and love it.  Simple to use and not over the top.  I really like it for some basic highlighting and giving a few spots usually forgotten a little Glo.

Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Lip Conditioner – I use this when I’m getting ready in the a.m.  Not too heavy but a nice lip balm sort of product that I put on before lipstick, crayon, etc. not anything that I’ve noticed that makes a huge difference but it feels nice.  I’d get it again, but wouldn’t go out of my way to find it.

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk – this didn’t blow my hair back or anything, lol.  This dry shampoo seemed to do about the same as many others that I’ve tried.   I have very dark hair and the white always seems to stick out, no matter how much I brush my hair.  I’ll use this in a pinch, sparingly.  But I don’t think I would buy this again.

All in all, I love the idea of the monthly beauty box.  I personally enjoyed the Ipsy bag much more than the Julep Maven box.  For the overall cost I think the Ispy beauty bag is a better deal with more possibility to find your next holy grail product.  Tell me what you think, have you tried any beauty boxes?  What have you foun that you love? Any beauty box that I must try?
